Yay! I finally finished writing this tutorial after working on it on and off for several months.
This is a tutorial for three kinds of simple buttons on Flash 8 but it's the same on Flash MX and MX 2004. I might make one for advanced buttons in the future.

**EDIT: If you are using Flash CS3, make sure you select ActionScript 2.0 when you make a new document**

You may have put the action on the frame instead of the button. Make sure you click on the button itself. Your Action window should say 'Actions - Button' and not 'Actions - Frame.'
